BIBLE PASSAGES

Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11

Isaiah 40:1-26

Mark 12:28-34

Matthew 4:1-11

This week the devotional focus is on some powerful words that were given to the people. In Mark 12 we find Jesus fulfilling the Torah and that the most important commandment was understanding that the Lord your God is the one and the only Lord and that we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our strength. Second, and with equal importance, was to love your neighbor as yourself.

As you study the Word, you are going to find the keys that unlock the reality of our faith in the one true God. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The messages are very clear and concise. “O Zion, messenger of good news, shout from the mountaintops. Shout it louder, O Jerusalem. Shout, and do not be afraid. Tell the towns of Judah, “Your God is coming!” Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power. He will rule with a powerful arm. See, He brings His reward with Him as He comes. He will feed His flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in His arms, holding them close to His heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.” – Isaiah 40:9-11

“So remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The Lord is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other. If you obey all the decrees and commands I am giving you today, all will be well with you and your children. I am giving you these instructions so you will enjoy a long life in the land the Lord your God is giving you for all time.” – Deuteronomy 3:39-40

“Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” – Deuteronomy 6:4-9

“Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.” - Mark 12:29-34

“Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’”Matthew 4:10

Questions for Reflection:

▪ How serious do I think God is when He says that I am to worship and only serve Him?

▪ How do Jesus’ words speak to my heart about the greatest commandment?

▪ Does my heart want to be obedient?

▪ Do I believe the Sovereign Lord is coming in power?

▪ Do I believe He will rule with a powerful arm?
