Obedience

Bible Passages

Numbers 25:10-29:40

 1 Kings 18:46-19:21

 Acts 2:1-21

“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.” – I Samuel 15:22.

This week the message is clearly seen in our reading. We need to decide daily to be obedient to God. From the readings, we can find how disobedience affected Moses and Aaron. At the same time, we can see how obedience rewarded Joshua, Caleb, and Elijah.

When we read Acts 2 we need to understand that our obedience now is paramount to the Spirit’s nudges and calls to obedience whether or not we understand at the time what He is saying. Jesus told Nicodemus “You must be born again of water and Spirit”.

In the same way, we must be born again of the Spirt and then begin the journey of obedience to His voice. The Spirit is gentle, so carefully examine your response when you hear His voice speaking to you.

Remember what I Kings 19:11-12 says, “Go out and stand before Me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.”

"To obey is better than sacrifice, I don’t need your money, I want your life. And I hear you say that I’m coming back soon, But you act like I’ll never return. Well you speak of grace and my love so sweet, How you thrive on milk, but reject my meat, And I can’t help weeping of how it will be, if you keep on ignoring My words. Well you pray to prosper and succeed, but your flesh is something I just can’t feed. To obey is better than sacrifice. I want more than Sunday and Wednesday nights, because if you can’t come to me every day, Then don’t bother coming at all. Lah, lah,lah....To obey is better than sacrifice. I want hearts of fire, not your prayers of ice. And I’m coming quickly, to give back to you, According to what you have done, According to what you have done, According to what you have done." – Keith Green “To Obey is Better than Sacrifice

Questions for Reflection:

▪ How does Acts 2 fit into my understanding of this week’s reading?

▪ Why are there so many duties of sacrificial offerings?

▪ Will I choose obedience like Elijah?

▪ Can I see how the disobedience of Moses left him outside the promise land?

▪ Does obedience ring true to me when it comes to the Spirit of God?

▪ When Joshua was chosen by God, the scriptures say the Spirit was in him.

▪ Have I come to the knowledge of the fact that the Spirit of God desires to make His home inside of me?
