BIBLE PASSAGES
Genesis 32:3-36:43
Hosea 11:7-12:12
1 Corinthians 5:1-13
When we think of Jacob many times the account of he and his brother Esau will come to mind. Jacob wrestling with God is something that has not been unveiled to some yet in the Word. For many Jewish people, this is how they see their relationship with God. Their life is a wrestling match between them and God.
Wrestling in their relationship to understand God and His presence in their life, they try willingly to understand their purpose and fulfillment here on the earth. It doesn’t appear that even after Jacob’s hip is put out that Jacob gives up until the blessing is released. Jacob wanted God’s blessing. God blessed him and changed his name to Israel.
Maybe it is time in your life to get into the ring with God and begin wrestling. Don’t wait for God to make the first move. God will show up if you reach out to Him.
“And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” And he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” - Genesis 32:24-30, ESV
“Jacob fled to the land of Aram; there Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he guarded sheep.” - Hosea 12:12, ESV
“And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” - John 1:34, ESV
Questions for Reflection:
▪ Have I seen God face to face in my own life?
▪ For what blessing have I been wrestling with God?
▪ Have I seen and borne witness to the Son of God in my life?
