Jacob, Joseph, and his Family

BIBLE PASSAGES

Genesis 47:28-50:261

Kings 2:1-12

Hebrews 11:21-22

1 Peter 2:11-17

Reviewing the lives of Jacob, Joseph, and David: we see family blessings from generation to generation.  These patriarchs specifically instruct their sons about the family lineage. These men share life-giving truth with their sons about the past and the future.

There is a deep family tie reaching back to the covenant God made with Abraham.  Jacob blesses all his children, including the sons of Joseph. Fourteen generations from Abraham the covenant and blessings; are discussed with Solomon; by his father.

David gives Solomon the keys to prosperity before he dies.  David reminded Solomon to keep the statutes, commands, rules, and testimonies as written; in the Law of Moses.  David charged Solomon to be a strong man and walk in God's ways.

Words of life, bring life and freedom, through sound teaching.  The Word of God is true, and the record of these faithful men brings renewed hope.

We are God's choice to show his great love to the world.  The covenant requires faith.  God, through his servants, has shown us the way.

“When Ya‘akov had finished charging his sons, he drew his legs up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.”Genesis 49:33

“When David's time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, that the Lord may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’’1 Kings 2:1-4

“By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, bowing in worship over the head of his staff. By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones” - Hebrews 11:21-22

“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”1 Peter 2:16-17

Questions for Reflection

▪ Like Joseph, am I able to follow the instructions of those who hear from the Lord?

▪ Am I able to receive that I am part of this great family who God chose to accomplish His plan for world redemption?

▪ Do I understand the importance of blessing my children and teaching them in the ways of God?

▪ Have I discovered the key to living as people who are free?

▪ Like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph, do I see myself as a servant of God, in my community?
