Throughout this week’s reading, we find ourselves in a position of trusting God when He speaks. Joshua and Caleb were the only ones that were found faithful after going into Canaan to spy. Joshua and Caleb believed God when He said they would take the land. They were convinced by all that God had shown them past, present, and now for the future.
The other 10 did not believe because they were looking in their own flesh about how they could fail. Why? The other 10 believed they were not strong enough. Correct! They were not strong enough. However, as we learned last week, what we do is not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit says the Lord.
Rahab and all her household would be saved if they didn’t break the oath and did exactly as the two spies directed. Rahab agreed. We are learning what it means to make an oath, live by faith, obey, and trust the one who created us in His image.
“Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.- Hebrews 3:7-19
Finally, in the book of Hebrews, we are reminded, “For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.” – Hebrews 10:14. Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed Him? So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter His rest. - Hebrews 10:18 – 19
Yes, we live in the age of Grace. However, if we disobey, God will have to correct us like a father corrects his child. Our job is to stay in a place where we are not falling into unbelief and disobedience. As the hymn says, “Trust and obey for there is no other way”...
Questions for Reflection:
▪ Do I struggle with unbelief?
▪ When God shows me something, do I grumble and complain or believe He has spoken?
▪ Do I know that God has plans to protect and prosper me where He has called me?
▪ Am I trusting in the unseen hand of God through life in the Spirit?
